Pilgrimages and Journeys to Special Places

REVIEWS

Elizabeth Benton

My first experience of Pilgrimage was in 1974 when I went to the Holy Land with Inter Church Travel. My husband had spent time before his ordination at St. George’s College in Jerusalem, and this link led us into taking Parish groups to the Holy Land, and later as leaders for Inter Church, we found ourselves leading to Italy; Jordan; Turkey: Greece and Egypt as well as Oberammergau & the Holy Land. I was asked to lead the Post Lambeth Pilgrimage for Bishops and their wives in 1988, and we ran both leaders training courses and Summer Schools with Prof. Howard Root, who happened to live in the parish in Winchester where my husband was then the Rector.

It was with sadness that that we saw the demise of ICT but were delighted when Philip Baker (who had worked for Saga/ICT) took up the mantle of organising Pilgrimage based holidays. I have now had the pleasure to have been on several Pilgrimages organised by Camino, to Compostella; Assisi; Malta and the Holy Land. Each one has been a delight, well designed, covering the important sites, yet not hurried, giving one the time to enjoy the experiences and the places in the company of pleasant travelling companions. The hotels have been good, and the Leaders of the groups knowledgeable and friendly.

I am soon to lead a group to the Holy Land, and have found Philip an excellent person to deal with. Any queries that I have had, have been dealt with promptly, and his attention to detail I have much appreciated. I am also impressed by the booklet he produces for each member of the party. I have worked with several other Pilgrimage groups (Inter Church Travel, Orient Tours, Saga Footsteps and Pax Travel) and Camino matches the best and well surpasses the rest.

I am delighted to recommend Philip Baker and Camino to anyone thinking of organising a Pilgrimage with the confidence that they and their party will be well pleased with the results. Philip’s Christian principals underpin his efforts, and those who travel with him, reap the rewards.

Canon Chris Samuels

In arranging pilgrimages over the last few years with Camino Journeys, I have always found them to be helpful, knowledgeable and efficient in all aspects of the holiday. I return to them again and again confident that they will help in the preparation of the itinerary and be available to respond to any queries that might crop up whilst in the Holy Land. I also have high regard for their agents on the spot in Jerusalem, who are always ready to assist in any way possible.

Philip Baker as Camino has organized two pilgrimages for me, one following St Paul in Greece in 2004, and the other to Latvia and Estonia in 2006, and before that I worked with him when I led tours for the Saga Footsteps Programme.  I have found him efficient, knowledgeable and good to work with.  He is very concerned to meet the individual needs of the group and not to offer a standard package, and his itineraries are nicely produced and informative.  Camino can be relied upon.

Canon Michael Weaver

The success and expertise of Camino is largely based on Philip Baker's experience with the late "Inter-Church Travel". He is now carrying on the important task of bringing together Christians of all traditions for a shared experience in places of significance, with great care over detail and giving value for money.
