The Cyclades

B0801A

Greek Island Archaeology Holiday

based on Tinos in the Cyclades

Sunday 15th – Sunday 29th June 2008

Starting in Athens, then on to the lovely island of Tinos in the Cyclades to enjoy a delightful holiday with opportunities to discover 9,000 years of Cycladic history.

The Lions of Delos

Tinos and its neighbouring islands bear witness to Bronze Age, Mycenaean, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian civilizations. Uninhabited Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece: the legendary birthplace of Artemis and Apollo. Tinos has at least 50 significant archaeological locations, principally the Temple of Poseidon and Amphitrite, and the Fortress of Exompourgo. Paros was a major Roman marble centre, and there are significant echoes of Byzantine and Venetian rule, with the best-preserved Byzantine basilica in Greece. On Syros, capital of the this island group, are Cycladic remains dating back to almost 3,000 BC, and Ano Syros is a perfectly preserved medieval hill town. Naxos, the largest of the islands, was a major centre of Cycladic civilization which is reflected in its magnificent archaeological museum.

Medieval Ano Syros

You will have the opportunity to relax at the comfortable, 4-star

Tinos Beach Hotel (situated next to the Temple of Poseidon and Amphitrite) as well as enjoying a full-day leisure tour of Tinos,  an exploration of the archaeology of Tinos and archaeological tours of the islands of Mykonos and Delos, Naxos, Paros and Syros. There will of course be plenty of leisure time to savour the sea, the sun, the wonderful food and good company.

The holiday begins in Athens with a chance to get to know your fellow travellers, a visit to the Parthenon, dinner and hotel in the Plaka, before sailing to Tinos the next day. the cost is £1,275 per person (single supplement £150) which includes flights from UK to Athens, all ferries, 14 nights half-board accommodation, all excursions and the services of the Camino Archaeologist who will be resident with you throughout the holiday.

Sardinia

Under preparation:

B0807

The Unique Cultures of

SARDINIA

An Archaeological Tour,

23rd - 30th May, 2009

Definitive details will be shown here as soon as possible. The expected itinerary is as follows:

First-time visitors to Sardinia comment on the imposing number of archaeological monuments on the island, and it is sometimes called 'the biggest open-air museum in the world'! The first human traces go back 8,000 years. 6,000 years ago the Bonu Ighinu culture thrived, followed by the Ozieri and the Bonnanaro. About 4,000 years ago the Nuraghic culture began to emerge, and their remains are widespread in Sardinia. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans and Byzantines all left their impressions.

This fascinating tour is based in north-east Sardinia. It is likely to visit Albucciu Nuraghe, the Coddu Vecchiu Giants' Graves (above), Li Lolghi, Li Muri, Madu Necropolis, the  Gemanu unicum and the Nuraghi aqueduct, Nuraghe Donnoro, Nuraghe Maiori, the Luras dolmens and  Ethnographic Museum, the Serra Orrios Nuragic Village and the wonderful 2,000 year-old olive trees near Lago de Liscia; the lovely towns of  Orosei  and Tempio Pausania and the fascinating Ispinigoli Cave.

probably between £600 and £700 per person

(single supplement around £75)

The price includes return flights, Gatwick to Olbia, 7 nights half-board in modern, air-conditioned chalets at Camping Tavolara, Porto San Paolo with en-suite accommodation, hot and cold water, comfortable beds, sitting room and kitchenette, with meals in the restaurant. There are comfortable furnishings and a paved veranda outside with a table and chairs, and hedging for privacy. The beach is nearby. Taxes are included, as is all travel in Sardinia and the services of your tour leader and guide. Insurance is available. Subject to our booking conditions which will be sent to you with the booking form. The tour is expected to be as described, but may vary depending on circumstances. The accommodation is approximately 10 miles from the airport.
